Chlorpheniramine Maleate

Indication

It is used for symptomatic relief of hypersensitivity reactions including urticaria, angioedema, rhinitis and conjunctivitis and in pruritic skin disorders. Relief of itch associated with chickenpox, emergency treatment of anaphylactic reactions.

Dosage and Administration

Children:

1 - 2 years: I mg twice daily

2 - 5 years: I mg every 4 to 6 hours (max 6 mg daily)

6 - 12 years: 2 mg every 4 to 6 hours (max 12 mg daily)

Adult: 4 mg every 4 to 6 hours (max 24 mg daily). To be taken before or after meals.

Children under 6 years must not be taken unless recommended by physician.

Each tablet contains:

Description

Chlorpheniramine Maleate is a H1 receptor antagonist, antihistamine. Chemically, it is (3RS)-3-(4-Chlorophenyl)-N, N-dimethyl-3-(pyridin-2-yl) propan- J-amine hydrogen (Z) butenedioate. Molecular formula is C20H23ClN204 and its molecular weight is 390.9.

Pharmacokinetics

It is absorbed selectively and slowly from the gastro­ intestinal tract, peak plasma concentrations occurring about 2.5 to 6 hours after administration by mouth. Contraindication

It is contraindicated in patient with antihistamine allergies.

Precaution

It should be used with caution in prostatic hypertrophy, urinary retention, susceptibility to angle closure glaucoma, pyloroduodenal obstruction and epilepsy.

Adverse Effects

Drowsiness, headache, psychomotor impairment and antimuscarinic effects such as urinary retention, dry mouth, blurred vision and gastrointestinal disturbances. Exfoliative dermatitis and tinnitus can also occur.

Drug Interaction

Plasma concentration is increased by Lopinavir. It may enhance the sedative effect of central nervous system depressants including alcohol, barbiturates, hypnotic, analgesics, sedatives and tranquillisers.

Storage

Store below 30°C in cool, dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach and sight of children.
